Our co-authored paper was published in Physical Review E! Kataoka from Wada's group at Ritsumeikan University did great work on it. The paper is here.
Bacteria sometimes swim by wrapping their flagella around their own bodies. In this study, using model experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis, we showed that this "drill-like motility" arises from a "buckling instability" caused by motor rotation.
The results will help us understand microbial infection and symbiosis, and could also lead to the design of future microrobots.
