Our research was featured on Nature Portfolio's Instagram

The featured work is our study of how bacteria get through narrow tunnels "about as wide as their own bodies".
The bacterium Caballeronia insecticola, a symbiont of the bean bug, has to travel through its host's gut, but the path is very narrow, like a "microscopic maze."
To recreate this environment, we built a special microfluidic device and observed how the bacteria move. We found that when the bacteria enter a narrow space, they move forward by wrapping their flagella around the front of their body. This seems to be their trick for passing smoothly through narrow passages.
