フラボバクテリウムという細菌が集団になると巨大な渦模様をつくることを見つけました。その渦は、なぜか必ず反時計回りに回転します。土壌にいる細菌ですので、ふと土のなかを覗いてみると、私たちの知らない間にぐるぐると回っているのかもしれませんね。学習院大学所属時の学生小高さんが主に頑張って実験をしてくれました。

We found that the bacterium Flavobacterium forms a huge vortex pattern when the cells gather in a group. For some reason, the vortex always turns counterclockwise. These are soil bacteria, so if you peeked into the soil, you might find them spinning round and round without anyone noticing. Odaka, a student from my time at Gakushuin University, did most of the hard work on the experiments.
